"20 no 15" Tips 2 organize your sewing room, Plus a "Color Inspiration tip using Aurifil thread"

Hey quilters...it's hard to believe 2014 is coming to an end. I've had some memorable moments this year along with some hardships but as they say "That's Life". The quote inspiration says it all. I've been organizing my sewing/quilting room mostly for myself (can't handle clutter) and Miss Lottie (precious Cat). I would love to have things out for easy access but with her it makes things difficult. I have to keep things in drawers out of reach for her which makes organizing a bit harder. I am guilty of "Pinterest Searching" for tips, techniques, etc. I have to elevate my ankle quite a bit so this gives me something to do while "being stranded". I have to say one thing about searching for organizing tips, those craft rooms are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I always thought "I was organized", oh my gosh....some of those sewing/craft/quilting rooms are bigger then my kitchen and have granite countertops. As a designer, I've had the pleasure of designing many model homes and usually did a combo Utility/Craft room. I tried to keep things practical for most purposes of how families needs are plus budget friendly designs as well. I will be the first to admit...I've seen some designs on pinterest that I would love to have...maybe someday! I have some organizing tips to share that have helped me organizing on a "budget". I do have a temporary "security block" that is not allowing me to download my pics so will post pics soon.
First....for any type of hobby you need inspiration..."Color inspires Creativity"...you don't need to spend a lot of money to have an inspirational spot in your sewing room. I used what I have...I made a "color wheel" using "Aurifil Thread"....great color inspiration!
Second...a "Design Wall" is a must for me....when I am putting a design 2gether, I always pin fabric on my design wall to see what fabrics inspire designs.... I stand back and say..."O.K., show me what you got"...kinda silly, but it works. A design wall allows you to "see" your creativity on a visual eye level (not on floor). You don't have to spend a lot of money to have one & you can search the internet for some clever do-it-yourself tips". I personally recommend having a few if you do several different size projects/designs. I have 3 permanent ones on wall but love my 2 tiny ones that I move around with me depending on my project.
Third...my most important one is..."You cannot be creative without another stimulation..."chocolate"..."Color and Chocolate" go hand in hand...literally....I laughed so hard while searching craft rooms on pinterest...I did not see one room that had a jar of candy....seriously, I know we all do it!
Fourth...Organize your fabric by color hues and try to cut/size your scraps by projects....fat quarters, charm squares, etc. I like to have my half hard fabrics in baskets for that "splash of inspirational color"...fold in thirds and roll for a space saver.
Fifth...Wrap your fabrics with large yard quantities on cardboard (you can get them for free at your local fabric/quilt shops...just ask)...this is a great time saver technique if you "pre-iron" your fabric for your projects.
Sixth...."Tag" your fabrics if you washed them...nothing can be worse to go back on your stash and wonder if you washed them or not...if you're like me and iron them it does make it difficult to tell sometimes.
Seventh...Have your cutting and or sewing table at a great height....preferably your sewing machine should be at desk level (insert) for easier access (less strain on wrists) and your cutting table needs to be at a height that is comfortable for your back. If you are not comfortable...you can't create!
Eighth...Lighting, as a designer I cannot stress this enough to have adequate lighting. If you don't have recessed can lights in your room simply do this...if you have a ceiling fan with directional lighting attached, simply add bulbs per watts of areas you need most. Mine has 5 lights and needless to say two have low watts in them due to where they shine.
Ninth...If possible invest in a craft lamp that you can move around with you from space to space, allowing you to have that extra direct lighting when needed.
Tenth...This actually goes for color inspiration....invest in "Aurifil thread chart"....great way to audition your fabric and thread together...plus if you are an internet shopper, it's a wonderful way to actually see your thread hues at hand....if you're like me "display it" for that inspirational color!
Eleventh...Invest in a "over the door" shoe holder to house your craft/sewing items...great space saver for small rooms...I have a bi-fold closet door and it will still work, just maneuver it until it hangs correctly.
Twelve...Invest @ dollar store...2 pk sweater/storage bags (18 x 12 x3 in.) are wonderful for storing your projects at hand and are great for taking projects to quilt functions as well.
Thirteen...if possible find a "Armoire" that you can use to store your scrap booking and or fabric etc. in. I love mine due to "closing" all of the items that I don't want "Lottie" to get into!
Thirteen...Check out "yard sales" for that ugly chest that is priced to get rid of...take it home pull out the drawers, paint it...put baskets in place of the drawers and you have a great/inexpensive organizer!
Here's an additional tip...if your drawers are somewhat reusable, use them as shelves on your wall & use some splash of fabric for color inspiration on the inside wall of drawer...showcase your collectibles!
Fourteen...Organize your ideas/projects in binders (label on outside for each project) if possible store away in your armoire for a space saver. Inspirational tips... view magazines....save that card that you received with an inspirational photo...I have many patterns that have been inspired by a card that I received.. Take a walk "with mother nature"...you will be surprised of how something so simple trigger that creative wave you need!
Fifteen...and probably the most important one....be comfortable while doing your crafts/sewing...you can find an office chair at a yard sale and paint the color if it doesn't suit you...just cover the fabric/cushion before doing so and then use a fabric hue to match your décor and reupholster the seat cushion..."Comfy & Cheap"

"AURIFIL THREAD, A MUG, COFFEE & CHOCOLATE 4 CHRISTMAS"

Hey quilter's...does the tune of "all I want for Christmas" come to mind...well, here's a wonderful last-minute gift idea that any quilter/crafter will love! Can you imagine receiving 4 of your favorite things all wrapped up in one sweet Christmas gift. If you are attending a "Quilt Christmas gift exchange" you will definitely be the hit of the party. So easy to do...select spools of Aurifil thread (I recommend a neutral w/at least a couple of fun/bright color hues), a coffee mug, a single flavor or coffee (you can also use hot chocolate or teas) and some Christmas candy (chocolate of course). Use clear gift wrap so you can see all that "yummy goodness" inside and tie off with a decorative ribbon. A sweet, fast, inexpensive last minute gift idea for Christmas or any special occasion. Definitely a "Quilter's D.I.Y" gift and if you are in the need of "cleaning your stash", throw in a couple of "charm squares" of your Christmas Stash. If using this wonderful idea for a "Birthday gift" or a "Just Because Gift" embellish your items with his/hers likes & coordinate your charm squares to their style/décor. Select your Aurifil thread to coordinate with your charm squares for that perfect gift!
Enjoy!

"CRAZY HOT PADS"... LAST MINUTE GIFT IDEA

Hey quilters....I'm sure we can all use an easy last minute gift idea with Christmas fast approaching. Well, I've been working on these fun and easy "Crazy block design hot pads". They really are a lot of fun cause you can just make up the design as you go, plus what a wonderful way to use some of your "Christmas Stash". I embellished the design with 5 different decorative stitches using "Aurifil 50 weight, #2250" (excellent thread if you are not already using)...and to make it easy, I did the decorative stitches first due to the thickness of the "heat resistant pad that I will insert before adding backing and binding"...as you can see it's a work in progress (note: last minute gift idea)...you can't go wrong no matter what size you end up with...just square up with your ruler to your desired size and add your heat resistant filler, backing, binding. The decorative stitches add that sweet touch to enhance your fabric and design. I love "crazy blocks" cause you don't have to be perfect (yes, coming from a pattern designer) you just let your "artistic mind take control". Also, a wonderful project for a beginner quilter and great project for kids to do as well. You get that wonderful satisfaction of finishing something "in a day", and a wonderful gift to give to a loved one. As always, you can email me if you have any q's. Merry Christmas & enjoy the countdown 'til Santa comes!

QUILTER'S TRAVELERS "CHECK-LIST"

Hey Quilter's....first of all "Happy Thanksgiving"...we celebrated earlier this week with kids/grandson Davin so they could be at home enjoying their family time. It's a little "quiet" around here, which is hard on this girl, but thankful for the blessings in our life. This post was inspired by my daughter, Nichole, who's always been my inspiration in so many aspects of my life. I'm truly "thankful" to have her as a daughter but a wonderful "side-kick" as well. Yes...when I need it most....she gives me a "swift-kick" of reality. It's always great to have someone smarter then you to keep ya in line.
Here's the funny....I was at her house and making her "grocery list", thinking I was being smart, helpful, you know the drill....writing on a piece of paper the things you need at a grocery store. Well, here she comes and say's "mom, what are you doing?" ME..."SAVING YOU TIME AND MAKING YOUR GROCERY LIST FOR YOU". Nichole laughed. Mom...seriously, this is what I do...she proceeds to get her "LAMINATED GROCERY CHECK-LIST"...What! Who does that! Obviously my intelligent daughter! She explains...I have it all categorized by my pantry goods, everyday staples, frozen foods, produce, dairy, health items, personal items etc. I just use a wipe off marker and check what I need. So much easier, plus saving money by not buying things I don't need and I'm not wasting paper. O.K....yes, I was standing with amazement on my face. First, I was so proud of her, that I created that beautiful, intelligent person standing before me. But then reality sunk in...WHAT!!!
Mom, really you need to do this, as she's laughing. So I thought, of the "quilter's travelers check-list". So many quilter's travel and what better way then to follow her tip. I used to travel designing homes when the economy was great, and this would have made my traveling days easier.
So here's my thought....laminate your list by your basic needs that you take with you always. Then have a space at end of paper that you can write in periodically to personalize each trip. Depending on your circumstance you may not be going to the same place, your needs will be different.
Categorize to your project needs at that time as well. I know that might sound minimal but sometimes you might be in an area where you just can't run and grab a notion or two.
If you travel with your machine...have extra needles, bobbins, etc. As a designer, I like to have at least 5 different colors of thread ranging from light to dark for that unexpected moment.
MY MUST...always pack an extension cord so you can sew in the spot you are comfortable with for lighting etc. at table in room (if forget, again the counter help can supply one or maintenance crew)
And I always "bubble wrap" my rulers and store them in between my clothing.
 * All else fails...don't get discouraged, sometimes we tend to get more creative when our options are limited.
HOTEL TIPS:...most of the time you will always have an iron...if not, ask or use your built-in (finger press)
  Table in room (sewing table)
Circle template...use personal items to trace with for shapes, etc
Remove fabric hairs...ask counter...they always have one for the cleaning lady!.
Hope some of these tips make your traveling day's a little easier.

"DEFINATELY A QUILTER'S DIY OR QDIY" LIGHT BOX"

Hey Quilter's....I hope everyone is having a great week so far. First I have to apologize to my neighbor Sarah...she emailed me the awesome tip last week & as much as it kills me to admit this...I filed the pics & could not find the "zip folder" I put them in...Yes, I know Red Moment. After going through all my folders, I finally found the pics that go with this great tip. I was scanning fabric from Hoffman & embarrassed to say.." somehow they were in that folder"... Anyway, I'm sure we all want a light box...but have you priced them? OM Godness...they are outrageously priced & my Sew Smart neighbor Sarah came up with this awesome/clever idea.
Sarah improvised her sewing machine table into a "light box". Her sewing machine table is motorized to adjust to different height levels...she took machine out & adjusted height level to fit a small lamp in...then took a picture frame ( 16 x 20) & removed the glass then taped the design to trace to the underneath side of glass then placed frame over the opening on the table...WALLAH a genius "Light Box"...that's aFForDable :-)...I was so excited when she emailed me this tip due to my Mom-in-law took hers back to Florida with her...not only is this a great idea but not all of us have that extra space to store a light box...now Quilters...this is definitely a QDIY (quilter's do it yourself) :-)
Sarah recommends blue frog tape for easy on/off plus no residue left on glass & Plexiglas for safety...but then again...she used what she had on hand ;-)

Thanks so much Sarah for this great tip...if you have a "QDIY" please send them in...we all need them!

O.k...these pics definitely are me right now...now a security device is keeping me from uploading Sarah's pic...so sorry Quilter's but I know you have the idea & will post pics later if can...in the meantime here's what's happening in my sewing room...

My parrot would be sayin..."WHY GOD WHY"...then in my hubbys voice Parrot will say" Honey why do you sew if you get so frustrated...then Parrot in my voice..."REALLY...go away" ;-)

"SEW SMART BINDING TIP"

Hey...I just had to share this one....I'm sure I am not the only one while sewing binding tends to get it caught up in the way. This is such a smart idea...but I have to say...a "toilet paper roll" works great ;-). Anyway, we've been blessed with rain here lately & due to this it "flushed out" four Copper Head snakes in the past three days....OM Godness....I'm sure you guys heard me screaming! Try this tip next time you are adding binding & if you have a "binding tip" to share please email me! I have some great tips to share this week & thanks so much for emailing/sharing your wonderful ideas.

"SEW smart & SEW clever"
Wrap the Binding on a section of paper towel tube, then put it on the vertical thread spindle on machine as you sew...OM Godness...it's out of the way & no Tangles!!!
All my years of sewing...why didn't I think of this :-)

"HE" almost got away w/ it :-)

Hey...hope everyone received some rain this week....we had the dreadful combo...wind/rain...lucky not too many pine trees went down...just a mess. Anyway, for those of you that know me...know I don't post personal funnies especially when it involves "ME." But have to tell ya when they say you have a BLOG you should share all types, not just what your blog is about....share funny stories, talk about your family...get people to know you & make them feel like they are in the room with you when your blogging...hmmm...well here ya go...join me at the most funniest, embarrassing moment I've ever had in public at a hardware store...Oh, for you locals, no it wasn't Burks...Mr. Burk is way to polite to pull this FUNNY on me :-)...O.K...hubby & salesman talking about how much heat our light bulbs are putting out in our bathroom...hubby & salesman are so intense in conversation as he recommends the correct type of bulb etc...then I come walking up....you know me standing quietly & listening...salesman goes...with all due respect Sir...it's not your light bulbs it's your wife..."She's Smoking Hot"...o.k...as all of you are right now "laughing" so was I...then I turn to hubby & he's about to have a heart attack laughing...seriously...after I got past the "awkward moment" because I thought...O.K. I'm cracking up...hubby cracking up & this "sweet man" was serious! O.K., now what! Well if ya know my hubby he's probably saying to himself "you don't have to live w/her"...then we change the subject and state the "REAL" reason why "I" need stronger bulbs...I can't see anymore & how do you put on make-up w/glasses on! Well...here he goes again...Sir your wife doesn't need make-up...o.k...awkward moment again & we are all laughing...I'm thinking...dude just give us the stinkin' bulbs & you made a sale...well here it goes people...wait for it.....Yes, HE then tells us he has the same problem getting older...his eyes are so bad now that he "CANNOT SEE UP CLOSE & HE NOW WEARS BI-FOCALS"...yes, I'm sure you can see my hubby & I really cracking up then! Ok...now you know why I had to share it & titled it..."He" almost got away w/ it :-)...well of course he was a tad bit embarrassed himself & then put his glasses on & looked at me & told hubby no seriously she doesn't need make-up....O.K....I'm thinking enough already...were buying the bulbs! As we are leaving the store...hubby & I are still laughing...then I think...wait, why am I laughing! Sometimes ya just gotta go w/ the flow...even if your the "butt end of the joke"....this is why you should shop your local stores ...Mr. Burks would not have taken it that far...he would have told my hubby....Cat's getting OLDER & this is what I recommend :-) anyway, hope everyone has a great weekend...great tips are coming in so will post this week...thanks for sharing your tips & keep them coming!

"OH...BRING ON THE RAIN & MATH SHORTCUTS 4 QUILTING"

Hey quilters...I usually try to have a clever caption/title to capture your attention & have to say it usually has to do w/quilting. Today we are "supposed" to get some well needed rain. I know some of you might be saying yes us too or some might be saying something else 'cause you need it too. I have to say I love Texas but the summers are so dreadful. One good thing is when it rains my quilting buddies are usually inside & I tend to get more tips...which I love ;-). Recently, I received lots of great tips plus a lot of math shortcuts which I do believe we all love. Also, wanted to invite everyone to our new Facebook page to share tips as well...I heard it through the Quilt-vine...please remember it's all about sharing tips...crafting/sewing etc...we all need a tip or short cut so share them :-) Thanks again for sending in the tips & please keep them coming!
"Blessed Quilting from our Home to Yours"
www.perfectgift-fromabove.com

This tip was a comment sent from my post quilting w/kids this summer...great tip & thanks so much for sharing!
*Teaching kids to cut fabric safely...she stated when Rotary cutting have them only cut 1/2 way up the fabric then re-position their hand up closer on ruler w/out moving fabric...a lot safer & they aren't stretching which can lead to an accident...I still use a glove that has grips on bottom to prevent slippage (garden gloves are cheaper & work just as well) :-)
*Another Kids tip sent in...start them w/ a small project like a pot holder so they don't get discouraged & take them shopping for fabric to learn the different textures/styles to sew with...great tip!
*Here's my spin on that...have them make a quilted "Memo Board" for their room...a fun/fast project & they can quickly learn the steps to sewing/quilting!
*No such thing as mistakes while quilting...just an opportunity to look at things a little different to come up with a Clever Solution! Love that one :-)
*From my Neighbor...have family photos for Inspiration in your sewing room, ...love that one Sarah!
*View cards for inspiration
*Oldie but Goodie sent in..."Measure twice, cut once" boy can I see my Gramma Lottie saying that!
*Use Medicine bottles to safely discard your used needles in before putting them into trash
*When cutting Directional fabric check before cutting to make sure design w/be right side up when sewing...here's how I cheat...I hold a mirror on it just to make sure I like the position of fabric
*Square up your blocks as they are pieced
*Cutting boarder strips on straight grain of fabric will help eliminate wavy borders
*Always iron your fabric before cutting & press squares as they are finished before joining to others

NOW ALL THE FUN MATH TIPS THAT WERE SENT IN...YOU GUYS WERE ON A ROLL :-)
*A Fat Quarter is 18 x 22
* Charm squares are 5 x 5 & make great gifts to swap
*Jelly roll is 2 1/2 x 44" & strips are great to piece baby quilts or cut into segments for a scrappy look
*Fabric for backing quilts...add 8" on length & width to quilt...when done quilting trim away excess fabric...4" on each side...most fabric is 42" now so double check...sew two strips together for backing
She uses a 1/2 seam allowance when sewing backing strips for extra strength (norm is 1/4" seam)
*Adding a DROP to quilt for Bed size Quilts
12" drop to each side & 15" to top for pillow allowance or make coordinating shams
ex: twin  81 x 110
      full    96 x 110
     queen 102 x 115
     king   120 x 115
*Hints for setting Triangles...thanks for sending in this one...I made a "cheat sheet" to keep on my cutting board so I don't have to stop & figure the math...great tip to share...thanks!
Block size    Side Triangle Squares     Corner Triangle Squares
4"                  7                                      3 3/4
5"                  8 3/8                                4 1/2
6"                  9 3/4                                5 1/8
7"                  11 1/4                               5 7/8
8"                  12 5/8                               6 5/8
9"                  14"                                   7 1/4
10                  15 1/2                               8
12                  18 1/4                               9 3/8
Thanks for sending in these tips....great shortcuts for us that don't like to figure the math :-)
P.S...it stopped raining...maybe tomorrow???

"QUILTING IT FORWARD w/ KIDS"

Hey quilters...just had this sweet email & have to share right away! She took my "Quilting it Forward" to a whole new level ;-) Well...her daughter is just now getting into quilting with her so they came up with a great summer project. They are going to take my magazine exchange tip & visit area nursing homes this summer. Oh my gosh, how sweet is that quilters. Not only are kids going to brighten the lives of people in nursing homes but they might even get to hear some stories as well. I'm from a long line of seamstresses & my Aunt taught crocheting & needlework. What I would do to this day to have not gone with my Uncle to catch worms for his bait shop & paid more attention to my Aunt teaching...O.K...that's not true...the truth is my Uncle came & got me 'cause I would cry and I rather would have been catching worms with him...I could not do needlework if my life depended on it...Oh my goodness my Aunt would get so mad 'cause she taught all the local 4-H kids etc. I know that's why I love Quilting 'cause I'm piecing & going right along & not trying to manipulate large needles amongst yarn. Kudos to all you knitters/tatters :-) Anyway, to teach a child to quilt is such a wonderful idea...passing on a great tradition & spending that quality time with them is priceless. I taught my daughter & she did quite well with her 4-H projects. So this summer maybe grab a few neighborhood kids & check out your local nursing home...surprise them with a few quilting magazines & a hug or two...they may not be sewing or quilting anymore but as I always say...they were the first one's to start this wonderful tradition & if you take a moment to listen to their stories of how it first begun, I think you would appreciate of how far quilting has evolved! Thanks so much for sending in this tip/idea...keep them coming!

"LOVIN' MY SMALL TOWN"

Hey quilters...first of all "Blessings for a safe/relaxing 4th". I have to say if anyone knows me is I hoard your quilting tips when they come in 'cause I'm usually trying to come up with an interesting conversation to post as well. Needless to say I've been working on "Lovin' my small town" for several weeks...I jot notes down so I don't forget that store or those sweet people & most of all how everyone has truly welcomed us into their town! But I have to say...Sunday I heard something at Church that just made my heart sink into my stomach...would have gone further but my tight jeans at my waist kept it from going all the way to my knees....anyway...we are supposed to get the "W" grocery store in our sweet little town. Oh my gosh...NO! Before I begin...I will state this is a quilting blog...sharing tips amongst friends....not today!...I promise to update tips this week but I need to take a moment & "brag" about this lovely town & state my feelings...this is the part about having a "blog" that I love :-)
We moved to East Texas to be closer to our family & our sweet two grandsons plus we wanted to come back to a "quiet small town"....a town that still had it's values...a town where people waived even if they didn't know you...a town that had similar values that I had raised my daughter in...not to mention the beautiful roaming hills filled with Pine Trees. We immediately fell in Love with our small town of Frankston & the heart warmed welcomed we have & still receive from people. Let me take a moment to brag....."One Traffic light at One Intersection"...need I say more on that subject...ahh yes..."One Pharmacy in Town"...that's right, not one on every stinkin' corner...wait for it..."One School Campus" & have to say/brag "has the politest/smartest kids" that yes....still say "Yes Mam & No Mam" etc...not to mention their athletic abilities are off the charts! If you want to see the love the "small town" businesses have for the "kids" just check out their windows during football season etc. We have "One Grocery Store"...yes that's right...where they still carry your groceries out to your truck for you...Oh my gosh was I shocked...I remember saying 'It's O.K..I got this"...nope, off he went...and yes...I was still standing in the store looking for that hidden camera & some man jumping at me saying you're on candid camera...as my mouth was still open...the sweet ladies said "not a problem that's what we do"...then as I'm finally going out the door as if that wasn't enough shock, I heard "We appreciate you shopping with us"...that's right...do you think that is going to happen when you shop the "W" store? Much less have you thought about what it will do to our small businesses that have supported this town for many years? I love this town 'cause we have that Old fashioned feeling...one hardware store "Burks" where they will order your item if it's not stocked plus love to scare the tar out of you w/ a fake "rat"...do you think you'll get that at the "W"...we have a "Library" that is out of the Old Railroad Boxcar....a town square where the kids meet to take their prom pictures at...Oh, "One Bank"...that's right! We love our "small town" where people help one another...where businesses always great you with a smile & ask you how you're doing...where traffic is a minimum & the streets filled w/love. If you feel we are in the need for "growth" let me say this..."been their, done that & don't want it" & neither will you! If we allow one large chain into our town it will bring others...pretty soon our sweet town will loose it's meaning...our kids & grandkids won't have that "special town" to come back to with their families one day. If you want growth, I say...keep this "Old Town" as it is & utilize the space w/an "Old Fashioned Drive-In"...where you can have movie nights with your family & share a "kiss or two" w/your loved one...bring "In" the sweet values of life to extend to our next generation & keep "Out" what will only bring chaos to our sweet town. I could go on but I think ya' get the gist of it!
As always, keep the tips coming & will update them all next week.

                                                                    "At the Lake"
                                                                         38 x 74
Fabric requirements:
1 3/4 hot pink
1 3/4 orange
Backing/border: 2 3/4 yards of orange fabric or coordinating fabric
Batting: 46 x 82 (extra for machine quilting)
or 40 x 76 (trim even w/ top piece before adding backing)
Cut hot pink strips as follows:
7 (4 1/2 x 36 1/2)
5 (2 1/2 x 36 1/2)
Cut orange strips as follows:
6 (4 1/2 x 36 1/2)
5 ( 2 1/2 x 36 1/2)
All strips have a 1/4" seam allowance.
Refer to the quilt layout to assemble the strips. Sew strips in order as layout & press seams in one direction after sewing. ( I like to have a portable sewing mat by my machine to iron each seam...great time saver). After sewing all strips together make sure your quilt is squared up.
Cut borders as follows ( or cut strips to your quilt size due to all machines sew differently...just remember to add your 1/4" seam allowance)
2 Horizontal strips 1 1/2 x 38
2 Vertical strips 1 1/2 x 72
Sew vertical strips to left/right sides of quilt top/trim sides even w/ quilt top
Sew horizontal strips to top/bottom sides of quilt top /trim all sides even
*Tip: make strips larger if you would like to use them as a border to fold over to backside of quilt to use as a border.
Quilting & Finishing:
Layer and baste together the backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt & bind as desired. Enjoy!
*Tip: Cat used a high loft of batting for extra thickness due to it being a mat. Also, she quilted in the ditch in each strip to accent the design. Do so if you wish. She also likes to make her border strips larger to do the turn/flip method as described above...then just whip stitch to the back or machine stitch.
*If you are running out of time do the turn/fold method (similar to pillow quilts) where you layer batting then top side of quilt (right side up) then backing (right side down) and sew all seams together but leave an opening large enough to flip quilt out...turn inside out/press and sew seam opening by hand...email me if you have any q's or the Internet has great step by step instructions for that method as well.

"USING THE CORRECT THREAD FOR TATTING & QUILTING TIPS"

Hey Quilters & Tatters...hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful sun that we've been blessed with lately. Please keep the family's of the recent tornadoes in your prayers. Life is so precious! I have to take a moment and share something so special....my daughter Nichole passed her Special Education Test...I am so proud of the woman that she has become and then to have a gift to teach the needs of special education. She tells me "everyday they teach her" and she's blessed to be a part of their lives. So proud of you Scoobie! Anyway, today's tips are a continuation of "Tatting Tips" by Jennifer with Zig Zag Corner Quilts & Baskets...home of the "Tatting Corner" and some wonderful tips that have been emailed recently...hope you enjoy!

Using the Correct Thread:
Six-Cord Thread...(Cordonnet) consists of tightly twisted plies (six in all). A strong, firm thread is suitable for heirlooms, hard-working wearable's and decorative designs. Considered the best thread available for tatting, it is not the same as six-strand embroidery floss, which is designed to be separated into individual plies. Her six-cord threads include size 50 Cordonnet Cotton, Flora, Manuela, DMC Cordonnet, DMC Tatting Cotton and Anchor Mez.
Three-Cord Thread... Three-cord cotton such as DMC Cabelia or Opera is often used for Christmas ornaments. It has a beautiful shine and because ornaments are not usually laundered, holds up well.
Two-Cord Thread...among the two-cord threads, pearl cotton is the best-known, popular for earrings, bookmarks and other small projects not handled or washed as much as linens or wearable's.

*Wonderful Wedding gift idea...design a quilt block that her gusts can sign at the wedding and then turn that block into a pillow she can enjoy for a lifetime...love that tip! After all...".Quilting is creating memories to last a Lifetime"
My Spin...use your "Tatting Thread" to embellish  the pillow w/ her wedding colors :-)
*Great use of old table linens....she made a bed skirt out of a cotton lace linen...attached to frame w/ velcro for easy assembly/sewing. Loved this idea that I tried it myself!
*When working w/ Scraps that have no selvages...work on wrong side of fabric...usually you can see the crosswise grain of fabric...line ruler with threads of fabric for straight cuts...thanks for sending in that tip...great for all those "Scrappin' in a Weekend" patterns that I sell on website :-)
*Create Mirror-Image of half-rectangles, position two cut rectangles wrong sides together and cut diagonally corner to corner...great tip!
*Octagon tips...always cut opposite sides of octagon first then the adjacent sides...keeps the soze of octagon accurate

Please remember if your tip is not posted it's because it was a repeat of a previous tip that was sent in by someone else...the previous blog archives can be viewed by scrolling to the left side of blog page to view all posts. "CHOOSING THE CORRECT THREAD FOR TATTING"

Hey tatter's this one's for you! Great tips on choosing the correct thread by "Our Mentor and Dear Friend Jennifer". We all know how talented Jennifer is and how beautiful her designs are so here's her secret! When creating your tatting designs choosing the correct thread is extremely important to enhance the quality of your artwork. I always say whether I'm quilting, sewing or crafting any design go that extra step to enhance the quality of your artwork. You want your designs to last a life time to past down from generations to come...so here's Jen's secret to her beautiful tatting embellishments!
Enjoy and keep the tips coming!

Choosing the correct thread is easy when you know a bit about threads and their qualities. Always consider the thread color and size and the amount of wear the piece will be subject to. Is it a Christmas trim or other piece that will be used only periodically and seldom hand washed? Is it a hanky trim, collar or other wearable that may be hand washed a lot? Is it a table topper, an heirloom-to-be or other decorative piece that may be precious to the next generation? There are threads for each of these projects.
Thread size...refers to the thickness of the threads. The higher or larger number of the thread, the finer it is. A size 50 thread is finer than a size 10. Changing the thread size in a pattern alters the size of the design. A dolly worked in size 70 thread, for example, will be closer to a place mat in size if you tat it in size 10 thread. "True" tatting threads are considered to be sizes 70 and 80 (very fine). All other size threads on the market are referred to as "crochet cotton".
Mercerizing during manufacture makes thread more receptive to dyeing so it accepts and holds color well and is almost colorfast. It also adds strength and shine, so the thread has a lovely luster and can stand up to years, even generations, of wear. Mercerized thread is smooth, easy to work with, and durable-just what you want for your tatting projects. (All cotton thread in our catalog are mercerized) Hold your thread up to a bright light and look at the fuzz along the strand. The less fuzz there is, the more the thread has been gas-singed (which smooth's and strengthens it). Thread will less fuzz will continue to look nice after repeated washings. Use the smoothest threads for your heirlooms!

"CURE FOR 7/8 CUTS/ JITTERS"

Hey quilters....good morning and happy National Quilting Day! This is your weekend for sales...visit our website for this months specials as well. Tip "Cure for 7/8 cuts/jitters" is a fast way to cut your strips without moving your fabric. I know sounds crazy and I'm sure some of you may already be doing this trick. But, I have to say....I am not a fond of a 7/8 cut and my designs require it. Creating designs with "Half Square Triangles" is not only unique but a "time saver" as well. I purchased two 1/4" Seam rulers by "Fons & Porter" a couple yrs. ago and between this tip and their wonderful ruler...'You have it made". Were doing a lot of Pattern uploads on our website so check back often to see the latest "Updates" from Davin. I decided to give him another job....he's responsible for keeping you up to date with all the news. Yes, I know he's only three but I feel if you start them young.......well you know the saying! Anyway, if you have any q's on this tip please email me...always glad to help. We've received tips lately that were repeats...I know it's a New Year but the blogs posts from last year are still available to view on main page. Also, we are designing quilts for you to embellish with Tatting. So send in those "tatting tips"...view www.tattingcorner.com for all your tatting supplies. View our Tatting page on our website below for "Seasonal Quilt Designs".

Cut fabric strips w/ 7/8 allowance
Lay strips horizontal and make your "first cut your 7/8 seam"
without moving your fabric make your
2nd cut your whole number ( ex 2 7/8 cuts you would count back 2 inches and cut)
3rd cut 2 7/8
4th cut 2 3/4
* Again...you didn't move your fabric and you cured the jitters for a 7/8 cut!

Here's another tip that was emailed that is a repeat must..."start those quilting magazine exchanges".
Especially for the ones that don't have internet accessibility...also, she stated bring some to the elderly...they may not be quilting anymore but remember...their wonderful talent started out quilting traditions to this day. Again...Quilt if forward!!!!

"THIS IS WHY I ROLL....OUT THE FABRIC"

Hey....hope everyone is doing great. We've been fighting the O' Flu bug but finally over it...and I truly mean over it! We have some exciting news...we have 3 New Pattern Lines coming soon along with a stunning collection of "Seasonal Mini Series" using Hoffman's New Batik line. Also, new pattern lines will incorporate a Table Square spin off for the beginner quilter. Our New Line "Fun, Fast & Fabulous was recently created due to the birth of Noah. We are also offering Custom Quilt Designs/Patterns for you to have a "show stopper" at your next Quilt Show. Oh, did I mention....free pattern downloads...that's right!
