Got Scraps?...Fun...Fast n Fab Easter Eggs!

 Hey quilter's...hope your week is off to a great start. I'm super excited to share this "Got Scraps?... "Fun...Fast n Fab" mini series with y'all. Do you save scraps because the fabric is just sew stunning you can't waste even the tiniest little piece? Well...I do! I even save my Aurifil threads when I'm trimming away blocks while sewing. It's amazing of how all the thread hues inspire creativity all piled up :-) Well...y'all know I've been sharing designs using the stunning fabric collection "Sunlit Garden" by Jennifer Thomas for Lumin/Island Batik fabrics. I love the prints and color ways and I thought how fun would it be to cover those plastic eggs and make a Holiday centerpiece. I love to die eggs...don't get me wrong but with the price of eggs these days it's driven me a different route. Plus I'm using those tiny scraps that I know would be difficult to sew together. In fact with this fun project the tiniest scraps actually lay better while glueing due to the shape of the eggs. I will admit that this project is very therapeutic and super fun. This would aslo be a great project to get the kiddos involved especially with "Earth Day" next month too. The plastic eggs are very inexpensive and I used regular school glue diluted with a few drops of water. I brushed the plastic eggs first then just started layering the fabric until the egg was covered. I did a top coat on the fabric to secure once I liked how the egg was looking. I placed the eggs on water bottles to dry (pic below)...so easy. For the thread eggs I was a bit more careful when applying glue. The thread...and glue...and my fingers became a hot tangled mess at first so  I decided to do an area at a time...let it dry a bit so I had something to hold on to then started again. For the thread eggs I let them dry on a waxy paper plate so they didn't stick. I also rotated these while drying too. The fabric eggs are to be filled with candy so I pinked the edges to give a dcorative look where you would open them but the thread eggs were covered solid for decor. They are not perfect but I had a blast and what a fun way to "upcycle" a plastic egg! I hope y'all give this fun project a try and check back soon for more of "Got Scraps?...Fun...Fast n Fab" mini series. Enjoy!

Cats Tip of the Day!

 Hey quilter's...hope your weekend is filled with excitement. I know a lot of y'all are on "Spring Break" so hope everyone is having a great time. It's still a bit "nippy" here in Florida. I love how the birds are starting to chirp...I think they we're getting tired of the cold weather too. I recetnly received a text from my daughter stating they saw 3 hummers in Texas. I've only seen one here in the past 6 years and I got so excited that I scared the little fella away. We had tons of hummers back in our Texas home. Another reason why I can't wait to get back to Texas :-) Well...in the meantime...here's a tip that I use a lot. If you're like me and you "hand cut" your letters then I hope you try these tips. I use Missouri Star Quilt Co. "Sew Light Fusible Adhesive" for my letters. It fuses nicely to the back of your fabric then I trace letters and cut out. I also was gifted these "Karen Kay Buckley's" pulti-purpose scissors from my late mom-in-law and they are awesome. They are perfect for cutting around letters etc. on fabric that has been fused with a stabilizer. Plus I noticed recently MSQC has a new fun color as well. I also use a wool pressing mat which helps when fusing letters to fabric. Recently I received the new collection "Welcome to Quilt Town" fat quarters from MSQC as part of the affiliate program and below is a "Sneak Peek" of the center. I fused and a-play-que" using Aurifil 50# thread around the letters. The design is a wall hanging "All Roads Lead 2 Quilt Town"' that I'll be sharing soon. This new fabric collection is super cute with fun quotes which inspired my design. In celebration of "National Quilting Month", MSQC has tons of inspirational events and sales going on their website. I hope these tips help if you are like me that still hand cut & fuse your letters. Maybe one day "Santa" will bring me the cutter that's been on my list for quite a while. :-) Wishing everyone a fun & safe Spring Break. Talk soon!

Duck...Duck...Chuck!...Phase 5 & Finishing :-)

 Hey quilter's...hope y'all are having a great weekend. I'm very excited to share this final phase with y'all. I've had a blast with this Quilt Town fabric collection from Missouri Star Quilt Company. The fabric is super cute and was gifted to me from Missouri Star for the affiliate program. I knew a design had to be created high lighting 'Chuck." We all love Chuck,,,but I wanted a design that could be for a baby quilt or an adult. I designed the quilt in EQ8 and you can easily enlarge the quilt just be adding more borders or even enlarging the width of the borders. Sew simple but it's adorable. I'm mean seriously...you add "Chuck" and any design is super cute...right? :-) The design did incorporate Scrappy Half Square Triangles but that clever fast patch technique made it sew fun. In this phase you'll be sewing on your border...quilting...binding. I will mention before you begin to press your quilt top. Check your seams on back to make sure they are flat and going in the right direction before you quilt. Also....I love "wide back" fabrics. Why...I don't have to piece my backing for a baby quilt or lap size. You can order the width needed (plus a bit extra) for shrinkage. The fabric is so wide that it really makes quilting a breeze. No seam allowances to deal with when sewing/quilting. If you need to piece your back fabric the internet has many options as well. Also when it comes to rotary cutting your border strips you will measure the longest width and length then take the largest for your cutting length. I add a few extra inches to that and then square up once sewn/pressed. You also might feel a bit over whelmed when adding on your borders due to the weight. Here's a helpful hint that I always do...if possible place your ironing board along side your sewing table to help take the weight off the quilt when sewing. I also use this method when quilting too. Anything to help ease the weight off your machine will help with even stitching and less stress on you too. Remember there are no "quilting police" in my sewing room so always do what is easy for you. Plus...final tip...I promise :-) Take your time...take breaks to stretch your back when quilting. Trust me...:-) I have a pic below of how mine looks before quilting. I ordered batting and hope it comes in soon. But in the meantime...have y'all seen the new collection "Welcome to Quilt Town?" Oh my gosh y'all...it's super cute and Chuck again looks pretty handsome as always. The colors and prints are beautiful and sew inspirational. So check back soon...we have a super cute wall hanging to share featuring this stunning collection. You know me...there is always a "scrap-a-long" happening in my sewing room. Enjoy!

Duck...Duck...Chuck...

Adding Borders...

* Press and square up your quilt.

* Rotary cut your strips 2 1/2 x top/bottom width of your quilt top.

* Sew with right sides together using a 1/4" seam allowance.

* Press and square up if needed.

* Repeat same method for the left/right sides.

Tip...If possible a solid or a simple print is usually the best start for a beginner. You will most likely be joining 2 strips together for the length of this quilt. You can do a miter joint when adding if desired.

But...if you fell in love with the Quilt Town Triangles print like me then here's a helpful hint for you...

First...I love to use my rulers to make sure the fabric design is straight as I am rotary cutting.

Then,,,due to my O.C.D. "only Cat does"...I decided to join my strips by trying to match up the prints and just sew a 1/4" seam to secure. It's not perfect but it works. I also joined the seams with the quilt so my border seam did not stitck out. :-)

After you have your borders sewn as desired then you will layer your backing fabric...right side down...then batting and quilt top right side up (facing you).

Pin & quilt as desired.

Tip...as you are pinning...make sure your backing fabric is smooth on back as you go along.

Once you have quilted then add your binding as desired.

There are so many quilting tutorials to watch if you are new to quilting. I know MSQC has many tips and techniques on their website too.

I for one will be machine quilting along with my Grandsons favorite old school method of 'hand tying."

Remember...have fun...enjoy every moment and be always be proud of your accomplishments.

Duck...Duck...Chuck! Phase 4

 Hey quilter's...I don't know about y'all but this week is flying for me. Sometimes I think it's because the "sun" has been peeking out a bit which helps with the humidity here in Florida. Watching the news I'm seeing a lot of y'all still dealing with the cold snow. It was fun when I was younger but as I'm getting older I've realized a nice sunny warm day...no rain...no humidity...slight breeze is for me. Hmmm...anybody know where that place is ? Ha! Well thank God it's always sunny in my sewing room :-) Well todays Phase is a bit exciting. This is where you start seeing your quilt come together. Your hard work is paying off. You'll be joining your squares together by rows. Now the traditional way is row 1 squares sewn together using a 1/4" seam allowance w/right sides together. Pressing seams as you go is a huge tip. Also making sure you don't have any "loose thread" on back. They will definately pop on the white accent fabric when quilting. Then rows 2 same method until you have all your rows sewn then you join your rows together. I'm hesitant at mentioning what I do because it's not the traditional method of piecing a quilt. One reason I sew my quilts in a different way is because "for me" I don't like bulk when I'm having to sew squares together matching a lot of seams as well. I sew my squares 2gether in sections...then sew the sections together. I know...what! But like I said this is how I sew my rows but you do what's comfortable for you. There are no "quilting police" on my blog :-) Thank God! Seriously y'all...when you are sewing squares 2gether that do have a lot of  "matching seams" like my design sometimes a "short cut" makes life a bit easier. I'm not saying don't do the traditional method of joining rows together just do what you find is comfortable within your sewing skills. I like to give tips that have helped me a long the way and at this stage of piecing your rows together can be a daunting. The pic below shows how I join my squares together in sections. Just remember pressing is the key but most of all enjoy the process of seeing your quilt all come together. Remember I'm just one step ahead of you but I'm actually still sewing some of my rows together as well. I'm taking my time making sure the squares are staying in the right direction as I remove from design board to sewing machine. Yup..it happens folks,,,thank god for a seam ripper. So take your time...enjoy the process and please reflect back to the design as you sew rows together making sure your 'Scrappy HST's" are facing the right direction :-) I thank y'all sew much for following a long on this quilt journey with me...Enjoy!

Duck...Duck...Chuck!..Phase 3

 Hey quilter's...hope y'all are having a great week. Well...this design "Duck...Duck...Chuck" is coming along quickly. Using the fast method for the "Scrappy Half Square Triangle" makes the design so easy. i previously mentioned how a "Design Board....Wall...or florr" comes in handy especially for this phase. You'll be rotary cutting your accent squares and rectangles which to me brings the whole design together. I used the 10" squares from the Quilt Town Collection Layer Cakes then cuttings from the coordinating Quilt town collection for the accent squares. If you do not have this collection rotary cut your fabrics using the same method. I love layer cakes...just makes cutting a breeze plus you get a nice sortment of the collection. I placed my half square trinagles on my design wall along with the rows of ducks before I started rotary cutting the squares. I like to get a "visual" of fabric placement so I don't have similiar colors and or prints together. You can view my previous post for tips if you don't have a design wall/board. I would take my time with this phase. Place your fabrics on design wall as desired. Step back and re-check to make sure your "Scrappy Half Square Trianges" are facing the correct direction (per design) if desired. I staggered my colors and prints for the accent squares but you create as desired. This is such a fun and easy design that comes together quickly....you can easily enlarge just by adding more rows or wider borders. I hope you're enjoying this scrap-a-long and check back soon. Enjoy!

Advanced Scrappy Rows...

Here's all you do...

* Rotary cut from one 10" square as follows...

* Sucut into four 2 x 10" strips

* Subcut each strip into two 4 1/2 in. strips

* You will get 8...2 x 4 1/2" rectangles per each 10" square.

Tip...pic shows that I squared up end then sbucut into the two sections leaving little waste :-)

* Repeat same method 6 more times alternating fabric colors for a total of 45 rectangles.

* Rotary cut from desired coordinating fabrics 18...4 1/2 x 4 1/2 squares.

Tip...whenever I cut a 1/2" square I will do a clean up cut at end of fabric with the 1/2" marking on my mat...then I count back the desired width...in this case 4" and rotary cut. This helps my O.C.D. "only Cat does" brain.

Following design...lay your rectangles and squares on design board/wall alternating fabric prints and colors as desired. Take your time and have fun!

Talk soon for Phase 4,

Cat

Cats Tip of the Day!..."Why I Love a Quilt Wall"

 Hey quilter's..happy Sunday! I hope y'all are seeing some "Sun-today" :-) Gosh..watching the weather this morning a lot of y'all are still getting crazy weather. I usually get restless by the time March arrives. I usually want to plant a garden...work in the yard & just enjoy sitting outside again. A few weeks ago as I was speaking to my daughter on my cell she noticed my voice was a bit shakey. She asked whats wrong? I commented "I'm outside and it's cold." She laughed 'cause I'm in Florida. Seriously y'all...Florida weather has been a bit unusual. I guess that' why I love sewing and quilting. The weather is always perfect in my sewing room. :-) Well, today's tip will benefit you before the next Phase of "Duck...Duck...Chuck," or any project your working on. I for one did not have a design wall...quilt wall for a long time. I would lay my blocks out on the floor even quest room bed and will admit I still do. But when I'm working and or designing a quilt and it has many blocks and half-square triangles that are going in a certain direction a design wall is wonderful. A design wall is usually flannel which helps your squares adhere to wall securely. You can also get more of a visual as you are placing your fabrics together. Change any blocks around as needed. In my next Phase you will be rotary cutting rectangles and squares for your accent rows. If you've finished your "Scrappy Half-Square Triangles" in Phase 2 you're probably thinking now what. Well...one reason I love designing in EQ8. You can refer to my design as you sew for block placement. If you don't have a design wall the pic below shows Missouri Star Quilt Co new Quilt Wall that is currently on sale. My link upper right will take you to their website is desired. In the meantime you can use a large piece of flannel...or even quilt batting. It just might hang a bit wonky due to not being as sturdy. I've put MSQC on my wish list for the Easter Bunny because I've used my design wall for many years that now I'm having to pin each block. Ugh! So check out all the wonderful features of MSQC Quilt Wall and treat yourself to a great way to visualize your projects as you sew. I thank y'all so much for following and talk soon.

"Duck...Duck...Chuck! "Phase 2...Scrappy HST's!

 Hey quilter's..it's Finally Friday! Hope everyone's week has been going well and you're ready for a "sewing weekend." Right??? Well...get ready for some fun "Srappy Half Square Triangles." I say fun because the technique using two 10" squares sewn together using the fast method of creating 8 HST's is amazing. Who ever came up with this technique deserves a big hug...I think anyway :-) I used to dread sewing HST's back in the day and now with all the time-saving techniques this block has been one of my fav's. I love this technique due to my design has a lot of Scrappy HST's, 54 to be exact but it happens sew quickly with this technique.You'll be sewing this technique only 7 times to make all Scrappy HST's ...amazing! I will walk you through the technique but you can always google instructional videos if needed. All be honest...when I first watched this technique I might have been a bit timed. I thought no way...then I tried the method and I'm a forever fan. I also love how you are using your "Pre-cut 10" squares" as well. I've mentioned that I note the rotary cutting measurements along the way due to this design being very "scrap-friendly." I love "Quilt Town" fabrics by Missouri Star Quilt Company but my design will definately help you clean out a stash pile :-) Also it's shown as a baby quilt but can be easily enlarged for all us 'Chuck fans." You can easily add more borders or make your borders wider. Sew many possibilities. I hope y'all are enjoying this fun...fast & fab design. I'll be featuring more "Children's Quilts" through the year along with home decor for entertaining. I thank y'all so much for following and wishing everyone a great sewing weekend. Enjoy!

Scrappy Half-Square Triangles...

Here's all you do...

* Select one light (white) 10" square & one print 10" square from Quilt Town layer cakes.

Tip...if you are using scraps...just rotary cut a 10" square as above :-)

* Place squares with right sides together.

* Mark diagonal lines from corner to corner on your "light fabric" which makes an "X"

Tip...I place a "pin" in center to secure fabric as I start sewing...just remember to remove pin as you sew to the center :-)

* Sew a 1/4" seam on each sides of diagonal line...corner to corner.

Tip...if you do not have a 1/4" foot for your machine just mark a 1/4" sewing line on each side of your diagonal lines and sew on those sewing lines. Just make sure you rotary cut on your original diagonal lines per next step.

* Rotary cut down center of squares...Horizontal & Vertical.

* Now rotary cut on original marked diagonal lines with in each square.

Note...I rotary cut this way due to it stabiliazes the fabrics while I rotary cut. The internet has many methods for this technique so do what is best for you...either way it's sew clever :-)

* Press each Scrappy Half Square Triangles to the darker side and square up to 4 1/2" if needed.

* Repeat this method 7 more times for 56 HST's .

Note...you will only need 54...save your spairs :-)

Have fun selecting your fabrics...I don't think you can go wrong with this beautiful collection of Quilt Town fabrics from Missouri Star Quilt Company. My link upper right on home page will take you to site to view the stunning collection.

Have fun & talk soon for Phase 3,

Cat

Cats Tip of the Day..."Why I Love "EQ8" the Electric Quilt Design Software!"

 Hey quilter's...hope y'all are doing great. I wanted to share a quick tip with y'all. I know a lot of us are still old school when we're designing a quilt. I grew up sketching designs for homes and to this day sketching a design is relaxing. But I will admit that I love the convenience of designing in EQ8, the Electric Quilt Design Software. I've been using their software for many years before I started my "scrap-a-longs" and sharing designs on my quilt blog. I've advanced along the years from the Quilt Design Wizrd to EQ7 then EQ8, that's how easy it is. It gives me the opportunity to put whats floating in my "design brain" to life. I love how I can upload fabrics and place within the blocks and it even has a "Aurifil" thread section to coordinate your thread colors. This allows me to visually see the design with color hues to make any changes a long the way. As I am cutting fabric you will get the exact rotary cutting measurements to allow for less mistakes and fabric waste. I love to host "Scrap-a-longs" on my blog. Designing in EQ8 allows me to see the process which also allows me to catch any mistakes before hand. I have a "portable design" wall...nothing fancy in fact I should get a new one soon. But as I am "placing & pinning" my squares on design wall I refer back to EQ8 for block placement. This came in handy yesterday while placing the "Scrappy HST's". In the design "Duck...Duck...Chuck" I have 3 rows of "Scrappy HST's" going in opposite direction. Well I had a "stoopie" yesterday when placing the last row of scrappy HST's in the wrong direction. I was able to catch it a head of time due to having the quilt design up on EQ8. Sometimes I get a bit excited when I'm finally placing the blocks on the design wall. Anyone else? :-)  Remember you don't have to be a quilt designer to dabble in EQ8. It's a fun & easy software to help you create your own unique quilts. Trust me...it's full of inspirational blocks...tips & techniques! I thank y'all so much for following a long on this journey with me. Check back soon for Phase 2 of  "Duck...Duck...Chuck." Enjoy!

Duck...Duck...Chuck...Phase 1

 Hey quilter's...hope y'all had a restful weekend and ready to Kick-off the first of many Children's Learning quilts with me. I'm really excited to finally share with y'all my Children's Learning Quilts. I've been designing Learning Quilts w/ the aid of my sweet Grandson Davin for several months. I've been waiting to share because I wanted to showcase the right fabric collection per designs. Duck...Duck...Chuck is featured with the "Quilt Town" fabrics from Missouri Star Quilt Company using 10" Layer Cakes & accent fabrics from same collection for borders & backing. I received this collection as part of the affilate program to host a long with the Kona Cotton white 10" Layer cakes as well. I thought this collection is perfect to incorporate the Ducks for this learning quilt. This is the first of many Children's Learning Quilts and they all come with a sweet poem to say with a child. I started this collection due to many times snuggled up in a quilt with my sweet grandson Davin...reading books and counting together. Memories like these are so precious to me and I wanted to share designs for y'all to cherish as well. He's now 14 and even helps me no on the "tecky" side which I always need. The design will be festured in Phases..so you can sew at your own level and cuttings wll be stated a long the way due to it being very scrap friendly. The Children's Learning Quilts are "Fun...Fast & Fab" designed in EQ8 and it can be easily enlarged just by adding more rows or borders. I know a lot of us "Adults" love "Chuck" from Missouri Star Quilt Company so this would make a great gift for any age. Today we'll start making the sweet Chuck squares along with his Duck friends. You can view design on previous post. Below is a peek of the poem that you can say along with your child once the quilt is completed. I'm very excited on this adventure and grateful for y'all following me on this journey. Enjoy!

Poem "Duck...Duck...Chuck!"...

"Count the ducks

   one by one...

Count the ducks

   fun...fun...fun!"

Here's all you need...(Phase 1)

* MSQC "Chuck Template" he's the star :-)

* MSQC Quilt Town 10" square Layer cakes

* MSQC Sew Light Fusible Adhesive (double sided)

* Kona Cotton 10" Layer Cake from Robert Kaufman

* Aurifil 50 weight thread (veriegated #3910)

* Rotary cutter...ruler & small sharp scissors

* Marking pen or pencil for tracing around "Chuck"

Advanced step (Chuck)...

* Scrap black fabric

* Aurifil 50 weight (#2692)

Duck background...

* Rotary cut from 3 White 10" squares in half down center then subcut to equal 4 (5 x 5" squares)

* Repeat for each 10" square.

Note...you need a total of 9 squares so set the extra side :-)

* Chuck....

* Select 1 yellow 10" square & rotary cut using same method as above.

* You will have 4 (5 x 5" squares)...only need 3 so set one aside :-)

* Chucks Friends....

* Select one orange and one teal 10" square and rotary cut using same method as above.

* Set aside each extra square :-)

* Rotary cut 9 (4 1/2 x 4 1/2) squares from MSQC Sew Light Fusible Adhesive

Tip...great time to use any scraps!

* Fuse to wrong side of all 9 squares (centered with in the square) and fuse following manufacturer's directions.

Note...I use a pressing sheet to protect my iron from any glue seepage. Fusible adhesive squares are rotary cut smaller to help as well.

Per design...

* Using "Chuck Template"...trace 3 Chucks & 6 Chuck Friends on paper side of fusible adhesive.

Note...the direction of Chucks and flip template over as needed.

* Using scissors carefully cut on marked line.

* Remove paper backing.

* Position "Ducks" right side up with in each 5" white square

* Fuse following manufacturer's directions.

* Repeat for all 9 Ducks :-)

Advanced step...

Chuck the Duck....we all love him so I had to make him be the star of this design. I used my scrap pieces of black fabric...fused the MSQC sew light adhesive to wrong side and using my template I then traced Chucks wing and eye. I then used a scrap piece for his beak and cut a triangle shape and fused using the same method.

* I used Aurifil 50weight (#2692) and a straight stitch with small sttitch length to secure wings and a "tacking stitch" on machine for eyes.

If you like embroidery this would be a fun time to use embroidery floss for Chucks accents.

A-play-que Chuck & Friends...

* I used Aurifil 50 weight veriegated thread #3910 which completed the fabrics perfectly.

* I used a decorative stitch on my machine and slowly went around each duck pivoting at curves.

Note... You can adjust your stitch length & width to get your desired stitch. Sometimes a shorter stitch length will allow easier stitching around curves etc. Play with your stitches on a scrap piece of fabric until you achieve your preferred stitch if desired.

Sneak Peek...."Duck...Duck...Chuck!" Sweet Baby Quilt

 Hey quilter's...hope your weekend is off to a great start. I don't know about y'all but this is the craziest weather. But maybe it's me...a man yesterday passed me wearing shorts and t-shirt. Hmmm as I'm dressed in flannels. :-) Well I wanted to give y'all a "sneak peek" of a sweet baby quilt that starts Monday. One reason is some of the fabrics are on sale today at Missouri Star Quilt company along with the "Chuck Template" that I'm using. I try to stay on top of the fabric sales that I'm incorporating for y'all. I know everything is going up these days so saving every penny sure does help. I'm featuring the Quilt Town fabrics from Missouri Star Quilt Company along with Kona cotton 10" squares by Robert Kaufman that I received from MSQC as part of the affiliate program. I wanted to showcase the fabrics in a sweet baby quilt but it can be easily enlarged if desired. I know a lot of us adults love "Chuck" from MSQC so just add more rows and or borders for a lap or throw size. You'll learn the fast HST's technique using the 10" squares which makes the design come together quickly. Plus we'll "a-play-que" together using my fav...Aurifil thread. I'll be featuring this fun scrap-a-long in Phases so you can go at your own level. I designed the quilt in EQ8 and will state the cutting sizes a long the way due to this is also very scrap friendly is desired. This is a super cute baby gift or fun quilt for any adult. I love MSQC fabrics and they were perfect to compliment the "Chuck template." I hope you check out the sales today at MSQC. My link on home page will take you for all the daily sales. The sales change daily on their website. This is the first of many "Fun...Fast & Fab Children's designs" that I'll be sharing in 2025. I thank y'all so much for following & talk soon!

Lucky Trivet 4 Entertaining...Phase 3 & finishing!

 Hey quilter's...hope your day is off to a great start. I'm excited to share the last phase of my "Lucky Trivet 4 Entertaining." As y'all know I'm loving this collection "Sunlit Garden" by Jennifer Thomas for Island Batik Fabrics. Well, in this phase you'll learn my border/binding technique if you haven't already. I love to do this technique especially on small projects. You also get to use decorative stitches too for securing the fold on back of your trivet. I will mention when you are sewing your binding fold to maybe not start in the corner. I found out that it is a bit bulky due to the layers starting in the corners. Again...you do what's easier for you. Also, if you have a preferred method for your binding please do what you like. I did use a scrap piece of Quilt Town Stars by Missouri Star Quilt Co. white for the backing. I like to scrap the back if I'm not planning on using both sides of the trivet. Again..you do what works best for you. There are no "quilting police" on my blog..we're just here to have fun & learn new techniques. As I always say..."Less Stress Quilting." :-) I don't know about y'all but I'm excited that my St.Patrick's Day trivet is finished and we're still in February. Right? :-) I thank y'all so much for following me on this creative journey. Enjoy!

Lucky Trivet 4 Entertaining...

Here's all you do...

* Rotary cut your backing fabric & Insul-Bright 8 1/2 x 8 1/2

* Lay block right side facing down...then Insul-bright

* Position your backing fabric right side up within your square.

Tip..I use a pin to secure layers 2gether...just remember to remove pin once all clipped before sewing.

Border/Binding...

* Starting at top..fold back binding in half...then fold in half again to secure raw edges and clip or pin to secure. I like to leave about a 1/4" "binding" on the front but don't stress...it's a trivet :-)

* Repeat for bottom of trivet same method as above.

* Repeat for left/right sides of trivet same method as above and mitering at corners or your preferred method.

Tip...once I have clipped all edges...I then make sure that the border/binding is all tucked in on the back side and every thing looks even as possible on the front. This is the time to do any adjusting if needed before you secure with top stitching or "a-play-que" stitch.

* On the right side of your trivet...stitch in the ditch...top stitch or decorative stitch to secure your border fold on back side. Take your time sewing...removing pins/clips as you sew...pivoting at corners.

I love to do a decorative stitch within my border on front of block...not only is it "pretty" gives me a chance to show off some more Aurifil thread but it secures the fold on back easier. :-)

Tip...if your stitches don't catch the fold on back of trivet...don't stress...you can tack using "washable permanent fabric glue" to secure. Remember...less..stress...quilting :-)

Well you did it...you now have a super cute "fun-ctional" trivet for your Holiday entertaining!

Talk soon,

"Lucky Trivet 4 Entertaining"...Phase 2

 Hey quilter's...hope everyone is having a great day & staying warm. I don't think I've ever seen weather so crazy. One minute I think it's T-shirt weather then we go back to Sweater weather. But not going to complain. One thing I know is "it's always sunny in my sewing room." Sorry...had to do it :-) I can't help it...this stunning collection "Sunlit Garden" by Jennifer Thomas for Island Batik makes me smile. I want to "hug it" everytime I go in my sewing room. Shhh...I actually do :-) It's like when you go fabric shopping and you see someone "petting" fabric. You know what I'm talking about. It's just like thread too for me. When I have a design in my head and it comes to life with the fabric and thread it's a win for me. I can always count on Aurifil thread hues to compliment my Batiks. It brings my designs to a whole next level. You will see exactly what I'm talking about with Phase 2. When you "a-play-que" as I like to say using Aurifil thread, not only are you accenting your design but it makes your design shine. Plus you get the chance to play with your decorative stitches on your machine. This trivet is very easy & fast but  highlighting this stunning fabric with Aurifil thread & decorative sitches you get a fast reward. I love projects that come together quickly but also learning new techniques. So take your time with this next step when it comes to trying new decorative stitches. Make a "sample" to try the stitches and stitch length. I know on my machine changing the sitch length and width will create a whole new stitch to use. I used Aurifil #3910 varigated thread and it compliments both fabrics perfectly. So have fun...play with your sewing machine and create a trivet for your Holiday entertaining. I thank y'all so much for following me on this fun advanture. I can't wait to share more stunning designs with y'all using this beautiful collection. Enjoy!

Here's all you do...

* Rotary cut your scrap pieces of fabrics to accommodate 4 each (per design) of the MSQC Half square heart template.

Note...I say scraps but you can rotary cut a piece of fabric to your needs. I try to use my scrap pieces especially when it's a small template...no stunning scraps left behind :-)

* Rotary cut MSQC Fusible adhesive to scrap size and fuse to wrong side of fabrics following maufacturer's directions.

* On paper side trace around your template...4 hearts Floral vine...flip template over and trace 4 for the Floral dot green.

"Lucky Trivet 4 Entertaining!"

Hey quilter's....hope your Monday is off to a great start. If your off today and wondering what could I dabble in this week...well..let me help you out! Y'all know I'm in love with this collection "Sunlit Garden" by Jennifer Thomas for Island Batik fabrics. Well previously I featured a gift bag using some of this stunning collection and today I'll be sharing my "Lucky Trivet" 4 entertaining using two more fabrics from this collection. I absolutely love fabrics that inspire creativity. I also received this heart template recently from Missouri Star Quilt Company. At first I thought what am I going to do with half a heart. Odly...the heart was lying beside this fabric collection on my cutting table and then it all came together. It was like the "Quilting Gods" shined :-) Or as my late dad would say..."It's an Irish Blessing." He was full of those one-liner Irish Blessings. I will admit...confess....that I love to make trivets for entertaining. I'm sure y'all have noticed that following me. I also love how it's a great way to learn or practice new techniques on a small scale. Plus if you make a mistake..no big deal..it's a trivet...you'll be placing a dish on it anyway :-) Seriously y'all...this "Lucky Trivet" is so fun and you'll be learning techniques like "basic 4 Patch half square triangles"..."practice curve quilting or accent quilting" around the hearts...learning my "border/binding technique"...most importantly...you will be "a-play-queing" as I like to say! I love it when my Aurifil thread highlights a project perfectly. I used Aurifil 50 weight # 3910 which is a verigated thread and it complemented both fabrics. I fused the hearts and then raw edge "a-play-qued." So fun and easy to do with a beautiful end result. You will definately love entertaining with this trivet or make a few for gifts. I have a few more projects coming soon featuring this stunning collection so keep checking in with me. Thank y'all so much for following & enjoy!

* Pellon Fusible Fleece (one sided low loft)

* Insul-Bright (insulated lining by The Warm Company)

* Rotary cutter

* Rotary cut on marked line.

* You will have 2 half square triangles.

* Press towards darker fabric (green)

* Sew Top to Bottom at center using same method as above.

* Your HST Pinwheel block will roughly be 8 1/2 x 8 1/2

Border/Binding...

Note...I do this easy method of combing border/binding but you can definately do what works best for you. I love this method on small projects :-)

This step is for your basic border/binding or make my scrappy border with the advanced step below. This is a small project so I wanted to have fun and challenge myself...it creates a unique border accenting the stunning fabrics within the squares of the HST pinwheels.

* Rotary cut 2 strips 2" x 8 1/2" sew to top/bottom of square...right sides 2gether using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press.

* Repeat same method as above to equal 2 border/binding strips.

* Per design...sew one border strip to top of block with right sides together using a 1/4" seam allowance macking sure your fabric colors are opposite and center seams are matching. Pin or clip to secure.

* Press.

* Repeat same step for bottom border.

* Rotary 2 strips each of white floral and green dot fabric  2" x 5 3/4"

* Sew to left/right side of block using same method as above.

* Press

Note...your border is wider due to later folding to create your binding.

Well you did it...learning new techniques on a small scale :-)

Check back soon for Phase 2,

Happy National Embroidery Month! Featuring... "Ingrid's Wildflowers" by MSQC!"

 Hey quilter's...hope you're having a great week. If you're like me...you might be dabling in a couple of projects...I know..just a couple :-) Well...I love embroidery and will admit I just started embroidering again last year. So many people told me that it helps with stress and anxiety. I know my sewing has always been my major stress relief. Even in Construction Design I always had a sewing project that I was working on for that reason. But I will admit that embroidery has been a blast & I do love how convenient it is to pack up and take with you. I purchase the Ingrid's Wildflowers embroidery kit last year by Missouri Star Quilt Company and I incorporated the embroidery designs into a "Hexagon Heirloom Fun-ctional Table Runner." You can view my previous post starting 3-20-24. I had such a blast with this embroidery kit that I then purchased the Enchanted Christmas Embroidery kit. I'm sure y'all saw last Christmas of how I made ornaments for my daughter. I love the MSQC embroidery kits...they are a blast...excellent quality & directions plus they inspire your inner creativity. The Ingrids Wildflowers Kit is on sale & my link above right on home page will take you to MSQC website. Well once you're there you will notice a sweet new design thats "buzzing" around :-) Seriously y'all...I've truly enjoyed embroidery...it's been a wonderful go to for me when I just want to take a moment and re-charge. Enjoy!

Island Batik Gift Bag..."Phase 2"

 Hey quilter's...happy Super Bowl Sunday! Yup...today's the day where I multitask...sewing...snacking & football. Well mostly sewing and snacking but that's o.k. too. But when you have a Grandson that is heavy into sports you definately need to be able to comment back on plays with him. This is probably the only time when I'm glad to live away then he can't see what I'm actually doing. :-) I do like to get him a bit rowled up...I'll deliberately start commenting on the oposing team. I'll text him and if he ignors my text then I know it's working. What...you think that's mean...seriously y'all he is the biggest jokester...he boobie-traps the house when I vist so this is just some minor pay backs as I like to say :-) He does get his homor from my late dad so in his defense it's heridatory. O.k. just to let you know how lovely he can be...last Christmas he "taped" the toilet seat so when I get up during the night...we'll you know the rest of the story...then he taped his Halloween mask to the shower...yup...just gotta love the dear boy! :-) Geez! Anyway...today I'm sharing part 2 of this super cute gift bag. I'm in love with this fabric collection & supplies needed are previous post. I know this sounds weird but some fabrics you just want to 'hug" them because they are so stunning. Surely I'm not the only one? :-) You will notice some advanced steps but do what is best for your skill level and machine. Sometimes I will use  another machine because it handles the bulk a bit better. The interfacing that I use is low-loft (thin) for that reason. These are gift bags so I didn't make them stiff. But if your machine handles a stiffer lining then do what is best for you. I know some of y'all already have certain brands/items that you prefer so incorporate as needed. I like to inspire you with designs but please do what is comfortable for you. I'm thankful for y'all following along and I'll be sharing more fun & easy projects soon. Enjoy!

Island Batik Gift Bag...

Here's all you do...

Bag sides...

* From white background fabric rotary cut 4 (2 x 7) rectangles. (great time to use scraps) :-)

* From fusible interfacing cut four the same

Tip...rotary cut a bit small as in previous steps to preven glue seepage.

* Fuse to wrong side of fabric following manufacturer's directions.

* Sew strips to left/right side of front and back bag pieces using a 1/4" seam allowance...right sides together.

* Press

Advanced.step..top stitch if desired.

Bottom of Bag...

* Rotary cut 2 white background fabric (2 x 10)

* Rotary cut 2 from interfacing the same & fuse to wrong side of fabric following manufacturer's directions.

* Sew to bottom of front/back bag  with right sides togehter using a 1/4 seam allowance.

* Press

Advanced step...top stitch if desired

Top band...

* Rotary cut 2 (2 x10) of red/tangerine fabric strips

Note...I did not use interfacing due to folding over in later step. Less bulk :-)

* Sew to Top of front and back pieces with right sides togehter using a 1/4" seam allowance.

* Press

Note...no need to top stitch..you will do in later step... less stress quilting :-)

* Place front and back pieces with right sides together and starting at top corner sew using a 1/4" seam allowance...pivoting at ends... back up the other side but leave top open.

* Turn right side out....isn't it forming like a bag :-) sew fun!

Advanced step...before turning right side out you can box mitor the corners if desired. I do mine about an inch...it gives a professional look plus helps it stand a bit better :-)

Note...at this point you could totally be finished just by turning your band over half and top stitching all around to secure but...I recently started lining my bags to not see the seams on the inside. I know it's a bit O.C.D. but this is a fun project to try a new technique on a smaller scale especially if you advanced to "handbag making." Hint,,,pop on my Sallie Tomato link for inspiration :-)

Advanced step...

Lining...

* Rotary cut your lining fabric to your bag size ...Mine was roughly 10 x 18 1/2

* Fold in half w/ wrong sides together and sew a 1/4" seam allowance on sides.

* Turn right side out and press if needed.

* Position lining within bag with "wrong sides together. "

* Tip...when you "look into" bag you will not see your unfinished side seams :-)

* Position the pieces together...matching sides seams and pin or clip if desired.

* Fold top band in half (both bag and lining togehter) to secure the edges.

*  Fold in again to achieve your desired band width.

* Finger press & Pin or clip to secure as you fold.

Tip...I did a 1/2" band to coordinate with my strips. My O.C.D. "only Cat does" :-)

Tip...I like to remove my "free arm" on sewing machine to make top stitching easier.

* Top stitch around band on right side with coordinating thread.

***Aurifil #2235 coordinated perfectly w/ fabric ***

Well you did it! You can use the bag as is without handles or...

do my cute advanced step. I love how Island Batik ties that come with your "stamp" 5" squares. I thought wouldn't it be a fun way to incorporate them into handles. I just pressed them...gave them a bit of starch...cut them to my desired length...fold ends in to close raw edge and positioned them within the inside of bag...pinned to secure and top stitch on the front to secure the handles. I did reinforce a few times to secure. I just love how it shows how much "I love Island Batik" :-)

Either way you just made a super cute gift bag that is 100% Re-gift-able using the stunning Island Batik fabric. Hope you enjoyed this fun project!

Island Batik Gift Bag..."Phase 1"

 Hey quilter's....happy Saturday! Hope y'all had a great week. I tend to get a bit excited about Saturday's...not because it starts the weekend but I'm usually sharing a project. As y'all know by now I love Island Batik fabrics. My late mother-in-law shared the same addiction with me which actually was pretty cool. What my "stash" didn't have I could usually find a compliment in hers. If y'all read my post last year of her passing and how she hid "forget me not" seeds in her Batik stash pile then you totally understand. I will admit that was pretty clever and going to pass that one on :-) I also wanted to challenge myself this year...break out of my "quilting box." I love to create new techniques but also know I better have a follow-up tip to share as well. Yes, my tips are usually from a mistake although some are just fun. I recently posted a tip on my Facebook page about using a "seam ripper." Yes...a seam ripper is highly recommended for this basket weave technique. Not only did it make the weaving easier...actually gave me an extra hand so to speak but it gave me more respect for the one thing I hate to use. Sometimes I don't keep it out..my theory is "If I don't see it...I won't need it."...yagh...still working on that theory. :-) Well in Phase one I'll be sharing some products with y'all that I love and use. I always say..."do what's best for you." If you already have a product you know and love then incorporate that into the instructions. I will not that please check out the "Sunlit Garden" collection by Jennifer Thomas of Curlicue Creations for Island Batik fabrics. This collection is stunning and was my inspiration to create a basket weave gift bag. I will give y'all a hint as well...I have a great home decor item coming soon using this collection too. So l thank y'all for following and keep checking back for more fun & easy projects. Enjoy!

Island Batik Gift Bag...

Note...bag is roughly "8 x 8"...easily enlarge if desired :-)

Here's all you need...

* Scraps from Sunlit Garden by Island Batik  (Red Tangelo & Teal)

* Scraps of Missouri Star Quilt Town Stars White

* MSQC 50# thread (white)

* Coordinating Aurifil 50# thread (2235)

* MSQC Sew Light Fusible Adhesive (double sided)

* Pellon Fusible Fleece (one sided low loft)

* Rotary Cutter w/ Pinking sheer blade & standard blade.

* Seam ripper ;-)

* Dritz Mighty Steam Iron

* Oliso Iron

* Island Batik ties for optional handles but fun! I love how I can finally incorporate them :-)

Here's all you do...

* Rotary cut 2 squares 7 x 7 of White fabric for Bag front and back.

* Rotary cut Fusible fleece the scant 7 x 7" and following manufacturer's directions fuse to the wrong side of each 7 x 7" white squares. Set aside.

Tip...I use a pressing sheet to protect my iron and cut the fusible fleece a tad bit smaller to prevent glue seepage. Do the same if desired.

Strips...

* Rotary cut from Red Tangerine/Teal fabric a  5 x7" square ea.

* Rotary cut from Sew light fusible adhesive 2 squares "scant" 5 x 7" squares. (same glue tip as above)

* Fuse to wrong side of fabrics following manufacturer's directions.

Tip...another reason why I love Island Batik...you can't go wrong :-) Fabrics are hand dyed and appear on both sides!

Note...read the prewash instructions that come with the Batik fabrics if desired.

* With your teal & red tangerine fabric squares & using your rotary cutter w/ pinking blade do a "clean

up" cut on the right end of square then subcut strips 1/2" wide.

* Repeat method for both fabric squares.

Note...you will have a few extra strips so I peel off the backing as I go...do the same if you wish but remember...save those extra strips ;-)

* Place your white front bag square on pressing mat if desired and take one red/tangerine strip (peel of fusible backing) and center within your square (pin at top if deired to secure)

* Then continue same method with red/tangerine strips 1/2" apart.

* Using the "basket weave method" place your teal strips using your "seam ripper" to help scooch over and under for each row. Use the same method of spacing 1/2" apart if desired.

Tip...I did not bring the strips to edges to prevent the bulk when sewing sides...I left a 1/4" seam allowance. :-)

* Repeat same method until you achieve your desired basket weave design.

Note...I like a heavy basket weave but if you find this daunting then space your strips farther apart. I don't think you can go wrong...remember to have fun...less-stress in my quilting room :-)

* Following manufacturer's directions fuse your strips. Remove the pins before fusing ends.

* This is why I love the "Dritz Mighty Steam Iron"..great for those small spaces.

* Repeat this method for your bag back square.

I hope you enjoyed creating this step of your super cute Island Batik bag. Remeber these bags are 100% re-gift-able so your reipient will enjoy keeping or sharing! Plus you are using your scraps in a very u-nique way!

Cats Tip of the Day!..."Island Batik Gift Bag...basket weave"

 Hey quilter's...hope you're having a great week. I've been having a blast with this collection "Sunlit Garden" by Jennifer Thomas for Island Batik. I love fabric that inspires creativity! If you know me...I love to make gift bags that are 100% Re-gift-able. You can read previous posts of how this all started due to my sweet Grandson Davin last Christmas. Well...I like the bags to be unique so the bag is a gift itself to the recipient. So todays post is a "sneak peek" of the bag I'll be sharing this weekend & a tip that I found very useful. I love a "basket weave" but it looks intimidating...to me anyway. So I had to come up with a tip to make my life easier and yours ;-) Here's the funny..."you'll be using your seam ripper!" What...a fun way to use a seam ripper! Seriously y'all in the second pic below you will notice that I used pins to secure the first strips then when I  started weaving the second weave...I use the "seam ripper" to help "scooch" the strips over and under. Once I secured the strips as desired I then used my "mighty steam iron" by Dritz due to the small space. Worked perfectly and made this sew easy! I believe you just might see some more "basket weave" projects in the future ;-) I will post more Saturday of this technique as Phase 1 starts on another fun and easy project using the stunning Island Batik fabrics. Talk soon!
